URBAN REALM DESIGN |
York Way Public Realm | LB Camden
We were commissioned by Camden Council in 2007 to undertake an urban design study exploring potential environmental streetscape improvements along York Way and Goods Way adjacent to Kings Cross station in Camden.
This commission was driven by the need to improve sub-standard on street pedestrian facilities so as to provide a more viable, alternative route to replace the historic pedestrian route through the station, via the taxi road, at the Wharfdale Road junction. Proposals included the removal of redundant carriageway space to widen footways; the introduction of informal crossing areas; de-cluttering of footways; new street lighting; tree planting; replacement of an over-engineered pedestrian crossing island with a simple, signalised crossing and an all-red pedestrian crossing phase. A series of public art works were proposed including uplighting the ‘Eastern Range’ façade of Kings Cross station using colour washes and moving projections. Some of our proposals were implemented by the council in 2012 to compliment the station renovation project.
