Westlegate Pedestrian Modelling | Norwich City Council
We were selected by Norwich City Council to undertake a pedestrian modelling study in order to forecast the change in pedestrian footfall in Westlegate, a street leading up to a major department store, resulting from the implementation of our designs from a previous commission. Moreover, we were asked to identify any improvements that could be made to their proposed detailed design that would result in a higher footfall on Westlegate and create a virtuous cycle of footfall increase, leading to a reduction in shop vacancies.
We tackled the commission through an innovative and clear approach. We modelled, through pedestrian path following, the desires of people in the street as it stands today and in doing so gained a thorough knowledge of pedestrian movement through the street. Having understood this we then had a basis on which to explore the potential of the design changes and by drawing upon our extensive knowledge of street design and their effects we built the case for potential growth and shop front desirability in Westlegate.
