Transport for London Town Centres Strategy | TfL
The Town Centre Pilot studies commission demonstrates our ability to think strategically about urban realm improvements and how these can effectively meet the Mayor’s ‘Better Streets’ and other transport objectives. TfL asked us to help them work with Boroughs to deliver a series of pilot Town Centre urban realm feasibility studies. The Town Centres in question were Romford, Kingston, Wood Green, Hammersmith, Camberwell, Angel, Archway and Putney. The principal aims of the studies were: to bring forward a co-ordinated package of movement and urban realm improvement schemes for the centres; prepare a phased delivery plan; and develop the design of a priority scheme for each centre to RIBA-C equivalent as a candidate for Major Scheme funding.
Additional key tasks were the preparation of a common evaluation framework to enable the potential benefits of different scheme options to be assessed; the definition of broad town centre typologies to assist in more readily applying lessons learned across London; and ‘street-testing’ TfL’s new Valuing Urban Realm toolkit.
The priority schemes in Wood Green and Camberwell have already come forward as bids for Major Scheme funding, and we are assisting the Boroughs with design development.
