URBAN REALM DESIGN |
Southampton Cycling Corridor Design | Southampton City Council
Southampton City Council commissioned UM to design a 4 mile long cycle route from the eastern city boundary, across the River Itchen bridge, and through the city centre, to the Central Station. The design driver for this route is that it must be attractive to people who do not currently cycle; in other words, that it should both be and seem safe and convenient to use.
Local Sustainable Transport Funding was secured to underpin the delivery of new infrastructure that will protect cyclists from heavy traffic along the route’s entire length. Key features include the comprehensive redesign of large, hostile junctions using techniques that are tried and tested in Denmark and Holland but yet to be used in the UK. Following positive response at public consultation, UM is currently taking forward the detailed design for the Eastern Cycle Route, with construction due to begin September 2013. We have also been retained to assist the Council in preparing its Cycle City Ambition funding bid to the DfT for a Western Cycle Route. |
