TRANSPORT + PUBLIC REALM STRATEGY |
Slough Regeneration Framework | Slough Borough Council
Urban Movement is in the final stages of developing the transport and movement elements of a town centre Regeneration Framework for Slough as part of a team led by Urban Initiatives Studio. The town centres catchment is restricted by road and rail infrastructure and by light industrial uses. So whilst Slough is strategically well connected, for many of it’s residents, walking into the town centre is not an attractive proposition. The Regeneration Framework is tackling the challenges of these key transport corridors through a network of re-imagined avenues, helping the Council to deliver on its vision of a low-car town centre.
The Regeneration Masterplan provides an inspiring and deliverable strategy for the town. One that can help to guide the larger development propositions at the same time as placing them within a bigger strategic picture. The future identity and character of the town centre is integral to this. The Regeneration Framework is helping the Council to answer the question about what kind of town Slough will become. More specifically, we have developed a comprehensive understanding of the current movement patterns and agreed future targets for each mode. This has then informed initiatives around town centre car parking, pedestrian connections to the train station and new cycling infrastructure as well as possible park and ride and mass rapid transit options.
Central to the Regeneration Framework is the redevelopment of the town centres two main shopping centres. This has presented an opportunity to re-imagine Slough town centre in the future given the changing state of retail, post-C-19 working practices and predicted travel behaviour. The role of transport has been central to this discussion including the demand for and shared use of future car parking provision. We have worked closely with Council officers to ensure that future policy in this regard helps to create the type of town centre that the Council want.
