Pedestrian Guardrail Audits | UK
Beginning with an initial commission for Hackney Council, we have developed, successfully applied, updated and trained officers in the use of a simple, robust assessment tool to determine the need for pedestrian guardrails in any location. Although in many ways just one detail of the complex public realm, the presence or otherwise of pedestrian guardrails in our streets has been the focus for considerable professional debate and is often the point where traditional engineering approaches and place-based urban realm design come into most obvious conflict. The fact that we have not only developed a tool for resolving such conflicts, but have found it effective in use in several other London Boroughs and acceptable to officers from all professional backgrounds, is proof of our ability to innovate while always seeking to achieve beneficial outcomes, not just nice ideas. It also demonstrates our understanding of detail in bringing forward designs for implementation. Our guardrail review method, which is part of a wider framework for de-cluttering that we call the De-Cluttering Decision-Maker showcased in Manual for Streets 2.
We have since completed Pedestrian Guardrailing Audits at numerous sites for:
The London Borough of Camden
The London Borough of Merton
The London Borough of Haringey
The London Borough of Waltham Forrest, and
Brighton + Hove City Council
The City of Edinburgh Council
