Oxford Street is one of the world’s most recognised streets and one of the most significant urban transformation projects currently underway in Europe. Stretching more than 2km through the heart of London’s West End. The transformation programme will reimagine Oxford Street, supporting the Mayor of London's mission to supercharge regeneration and create a safer, greener and more comfortable public space along the entire stretch of the street.
The Oxford Street Development Corporation have assembled a world-leading design team with experience at London and International levels to support the transformation of Oxford Street. East, along with JL Gibbons, Gehl, and Publica are designing the first phase - a 1km pedestrianised section between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Led by Hawkins\Brown, with ASPECT Studios, Urban Movement and Michael Grubb Studios we developing a long-term whole street strategy (from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road) and concept designs for future phases. Urban Movement is providing strategic leadership on civic design, movement and pedestrian experience across the programme. Working closely with the wider consultant team and the Oxford Street Development Corporation, we are ensuring that movement is treated as a fundamental design driver, shaping how people experience, navigate and enjoy Oxford Street both today and into the future. Our role extends well beyond transport planning or pedestrian analysis. As strategic advisers on civic design and movement, we are helping define how movement should shape the future character of Oxford Street itself, balancing the demands of one of Europe’s busiest pedestrian corridors with the ambition to create an exceptional civic destination. Drawing on Urban Movement’s mission-led approach, our work combines urban design, transport planning, landscape thinking and behavioural understanding to create places that support quality of life, social inclusion and environmental resilience. We specialise in balancing movement and place, translating complex operational requirements into clear design principles that deliver better streets and public spaces for people, place and planet. For Oxford Street, this includes supporting the development of the pedestrian comfort strategy, movement framework, junction and interchange design principles, wayfinding strategy and wider walking network. We are advising on how the street can accommodate extraordinary levels of pedestrian activity while remaining comfortable, accessible and enjoyable, helping establish a new benchmark for city-centre streets.
