Little Haldens Masterplan | Human Nature with Aviva Investors
The greenest and most elegant new place in England.
Little Haldens (meaning ‘secluded valley’) is a plan for a super-green extension to the eastern edge of Wycombe. Organised as three characterful ‘villages’, connected by a sinuous country lane and designed to flow along the contours of the western slopes of the valley, Little Haldens nestles into its host landscape. The scheme benefits from a lovely public square with school, cafe, workspaces, community facilities, EV car and bike club and other ancillary sustainability features. The valley floor and edges will be regenerated as chalk grassland, 4,000 new trees planted and an extra 1km of hedgerows created leading to a significant increase in habitats and biodiversity across the valley.
Human Nature selected Urban Movement to lead the design of transport, streets, and public realm as part of the design team - building on our portfolio of, and expertise in, delivering streets and transport systems that balance the needs of movement and place and deliver high quality urban spaces in which community life thrives.
We approached this ambitious project with the knowledge that transport and streets have so much more to give to places that simply serving a movement function. We started by working with the local authorities and highways team to deliver the place that their policies and political agendas called for. A development that responded to the climate emergency, air quality crises, inactivity crises, and wellbeing.
Throughout the process we worked closely as a collaborative team - including designers, landowners, local groups, local people and importantly the local authorities - to genuinely set the bar high for what good development should be, whilst building essential and beautiful homes for all in a new and truly sustainable community fit for the 21st-century.
