Hayes Town Centre Strategy | LB Hillingdon
Following on from our commission from Crossrail to undertake the Urban Integration Design work at Hayes & Harlington Station, Hillingdon Council commissioned us to undertake an urban realm and movement study for the adjacent town centre. The central purpose was to prepare initial designs for future progression as a TfL Major Scheme bid.
The town centre is a very complex location, with no general traffic able to move north-south through it to the axis of the traditional ‘high street’ (Station Road-Coldharbour Lane). Parking is a particular problem, with our work demonstrating that although there is almost constant daytime queuing for the relatively small number of on-street spaces, there is significant under-utilisation of the centre’s several off-street car parks, several of which are close by.
In developing design options, it became clear that the choice between them was primarily between significantly different traffic management alternatives, rather than relatively modest differences in the use of space, parking and bus arrangements or the type of materials. Consequently, we prepared a ‘Transport Options Report’ to inform a and guide Council officers in preparing their Major Scheme Step 1 submission.
