Harrow Town Centre Public Realm Strategy | Harrow Council
Station Road runs through the heart of Harrow Town Centre which is one of just 11 Metropolitan town centres in London. The scheme opened in April 2011, and our first involvement began in August 2006 when we were commissioned by Harrow Council to prepare an Urban Design Framework and an accompanying Public Realm Strategy for the whole centre. Following on from that first commission, we undertook a town centre Access and Movement Study which encompassed a fundamental re-think of the centre in transport terms and resulted in the development of seven discrete streetscape interventions that formed a strategy capable of being delivered by any combination of funding from both the private and public sectors.
We were subsequently commissioned to take the first two of these seven interventions to the next stage of design. In turn, this led to our preparing detailed urban realm design proposals that formed the basis for the Council’s success in securing over £3m of TfL Area Based Scheme and Bus Priority funding for major streetscape and bus service improvements to Station Road, ensuring its future as a vibrant, mixed-use high street at the heart of the centre. We then worked as design advisor up to scheme opening just over a year ago.
