URBAN REALM DESIGN |
Central Street Masterplan | London Borough of Islington
Urban Movement, as part of a team led by We Made That, were appointed by Islington Council to prepare a Masterplan for Central Street in Islington. Our ongoing work is focused on the following outcomes:
• a better street environment for pedestrians, particular respect of safety, accessibility and overall appearance;
• improved walking and cycling connectivity through public realm improvements along and around Central Street;
• an increase in social cohesion, both through bringing local people together to collectively shape
the scheme, and through the re-creation of Central Street as a shared civic space that can bring the neighbourhood’s diverse community together;
• improved health and wellbeing of residents through creating a better street for walking and cycling; and
• enabling local residents to share in the benefits of the regeneration of the area (specifically the high levels of new housing development) through the delivery of a substantially better street that is attractive, comfortable and accessible for all members of the community and makes local services easier to use.
Preparing this public realm masterplan is a design-led exercise that focuses on reconfiguring the street and its spaces in response to existing and proposed buildings, and their current and future uses. The team will engage communities in developing proposals for Central Street to become a better space for the neighbourhood’s community and create routes along which people feel comfortable walking and cycling.
Our ongoing work is focused on raising the quality of the street environment and aims to improve the safety, accessibility and overall appearance of the street, as well as develop opportunities for a range of activities to encourage more people to lead more active and social lives near where they live and work. A significant part of this includes creating a better network of streets for walking and cycling.
We are enabling local residents to share in the benefits of the regeneration of the area , specifically the high levels of new residential development, through the delivery of a substantially better street that is attractive, comfortable and accessible for all members of the community and makes local services easier to use.
One of the key ambitions of the project is to engage the communities around Central Street with the developing proposals through workshops and activities. We are using a mobile consultation cycle to reach out to the communities in the area. The key outcome is a RIBA Stage 2+ masterplan.
